The Founding of Cork County Board
A meeting of delegates representing all the clubs in the city and county of Cork who were affiliated to the GAA was held on December 19th, 1886 at Alderman Horganâs, Maylor Street.
The purpose of this meeting was to elect a County Committee consisting of a chairman, honorary secretary and five others, in pursuance of a resolution at the recent Thurles Convention. The Committee was to have the power to decide all questions of affiliation that might arise in the county, and of arranging preliminary ties in the hurling, football, handball and athletics championships. The attendance was large and representative, and the proceedings throughout appear to have been on a most harmonious nature.

After the vote, Alderman Horgan was declared elected amidst applause.
Mr. Scott then proposed that Mr. DM Lane, hon. Sec. Cork Nationals, be elected as honorary secretary of the County Committee. Alderman Horgan proposed that Mr. Robert Walsh be elected to the position, and this was seconded by Mr. Deering, but as these two gentlemen belonged to the same club, Mr. Walsh withdrew and Mr. Lane was elected.

Hurling Championship
Passage won their way to the final, which was never played. In the other semi-final, between St. Finbarrâs and Cork Nationals, a dispute over a score led to the game being unfinished. This game took place on a Friday; the winners were to have played Passage the following day and the County Champions were due to play Tullaroan in Dungarvan on the Sunday in the All-Ireland Championship.
Passage agreed to let Cork Nationals and St. Finbarrâs toss to see who would represent Cork, but Cork Nationals would not agree and so Cork were forced to give a walkover.
Cork Nationals and St. Finbarrâs were later invited to play a game in Tralee which the County Committee ruled would count as a re-fixture of the semi-final. Cork Nationals won 4-5 to 0-4 but despite several attempts, the final was never played.
In September, the Honorary Secretary, DM Lane, emigrated and was replaced by Eugene Cotter for the remainder of the year.
