History was made last Sunday in the sunshine at Carrigtwohill All Weather Facility (AWF). The social and recreation games, Camán Abú and Peil Abú, were played for the very first time at this venue. One spectator described the games as being ‘full of activity, competitive and buckets of fun'. One example of this was seen when one of the participants from the green team scored a goal and cheered with delight! Her opponent congratulated her following this with a pat of the back.

The principles of these games include fun, recreation, non-contact and mixed gender teams. They are open to be played by all ages from 16 plus years.

Camán Abú is played with plastic hurleys and a softer and larger sliothar compared to the traditional game. The aim of the game is to score more goals that your opposition. Some of the rules include non-contact, ground hurling only and hooking / blocking is prohibited.

Peil Abú can be described as a cross between Gaelic football and Tag Rugby. Each player wears two tags at waist level. Opponents can dispossess the player with the ball by pulling his / her tag only. Like Camán Abú the aim of the games is to score more than your opposition.

The games at Carrigtwohill AWF are played with 6 players per team - A goalkeeper and five outfielders.

Following the success of last Sunday, exhibition matches of the games, free of charge, will take place for the next four weeks on Thursdays from 8.30pm - 9.30pm and Sundays from 12pm - 1pm. All are encouraged to come along, spectate and give the games a try!
